Of course I would have pulled out and saved for myself the Yiyun piece. But then you so generously shared it on the post! Thank you. Going to listen to the podcast when I can.
I am way behind on Substack comments. Thank you for continuing to educate me.
I did not miss the points of your words and fresco like pictures --they are with me.
Home Products: I just read Patrick Joyce's Remembering Peasants: A Personal History of a Vanishing World. The author who is, I believe, a social historian, shifted to writing history memoir. One of your earlier books lead the idea that academic writing could/should loosen up (my non academic words.) You would, I believe enjoy the Mr. Joyce's book. At one point, he refers to James Joyce originally a "home" boy as "bourgeoise." It is difficult to describe Irish humor and revenge, but there it is.
When I was a student, I saw your Vita ---you were born on March 17. Do you know the ecstasy the Irish have when a child is born on the feast of St. Patrick? The Irish and Irish Americans will celebrate you when they hear more of yuor luck. You have a new country --it is yours.
I hope your baby girl is loving her college years.

Happy to know that one day I will have pastry.
Sorry for the rambling,

Lovely report, Mary. Hope you are doing well.
Thank you so much for this. I often think that if life were a Star Wars movie, Yiyun would be our Yoda.
